We will appreciate your continued patronage and support.

History of Nori (seaweed) and Suwa

The history of Nori peddling in Suwa region is old, dating back to the Edo era (after 1804) that many young people went along roads of Nakasendo and Koshukaido to Asakusa to serve their apprenticeship during harsh winter periods.
In 1852, Oyubanakou, a nori merchant's syndicate, was established. There are a lot of relevant records including its dedication of "Daidai Okagura"to Suwa Taisha, a local shrine.
There is still “Tenryusuisha” in the grounds of Suwa Taisha Shrine, which nori peddler visited to obtain sacred water before setting out on a trip to Edo. At least three drops of the water were believed to fall even on a sunny day.
